The Yonus Davis Foundation launched Healthy Active Oakland Youth in 2020 as a DBA initiative to address the growing need for safe, structured, and engaging opportunities for youth throughout Oakland and the greater Bay Area.
In many neighborhoods, young people face barriers to regular physical activity, access to nutritious food, and consistent mentorship. These challenges contribute to health disparities, increased exposure to unsafe environments, and limited opportunities for positive youth development.
Healthy Active Oakland Youth was created to combat these issues by providing structured programs that promote physical health, mental wellness, and leadership development. Through organized sports, fitness training, environmental education, and mentorship, we create safe spaces where youth can stay active, build confidence, and develop life skills that carry beyond the field.
Our program also emphasizes community engagement, healthy lifestyle choices, and positive peer relationships. By integrating athletics with mentorship and wellness education, we help young people build discipline, accountability, and resilience.
Our goal is simple: to help Bay Area youth grow strong physically, mentally, and emotionally while creating pathways toward leadership, opportunity, and long-term success.
Teens Go Green & Stop The Violence is a youth development program created by the Yonus Davis Foundation (YDF) that combines sports, nutrition education, environmental awareness, and mentorship into a holistic approach to youth development for children ages 5–14.
The program was designed to engage young people in positive activities that promote physical health, environmental responsibility, and community leadership while also addressing the root causes of youth violence through mentorship and structured engagement.
In addition to organized sports and fitness programming, YDF places a strong emphasis on nutrition education and healthy living. Through workshops, cooking demonstrations, and community events, youth learn the importance of balanced nutrition, making healthy food choices, and developing lifelong habits that support physical and mental well-being.
The Teens Go Green component introduces youth to environmental awareness and sustainability. Participants learn how everyday behaviors impact the environment, including topics such as climate change, waste management, recycling, and the effects of global warming and changing weather patterns.
Through hands-on learning and community engagement activities, youth are encouraged to increase their environmental consciousness and adopt responsible practices that protect their communities and natural resources.
The program also introduces young people to career pathways connected to environmental stewardship, helping them explore opportunities in sustainability, conservation, and green innovation.
By combining athletics, mentorship, environmental education, and healthy lifestyle development, Teens Go Green & Stop The Violence empowers youth to become responsible leaders who contribute positively to their families, their communities, and the future of the planet.
At the Yonus Davis Foundation (YDF), we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Over the past five years, our programs have evolved to recognize that youth development requires more than athletics it requires emotional support, mentorship, and safe spaces where young people can grow with confidence.
Our Mental Health & Wellness Support services provide youth and families with access to trauma-informed care, peer mentorship, and connections to licensed therapy providers. Through these services, we help young people develop emotional resilience, self-awareness, and healthy coping strategies.
A key part of this effort is “Amongst Athletes: The Coach John Beam Leadership & Wellness Initiative.” Inspired by legendary mentor Coach John Beam, this initiative focuses on building strong character, leadership, and mental toughness both on and off the field. Through structured mentorship circles, leadership workshops, and wellness discussions, youth learn how to manage stress, build discipline, and support one another as teammates and leaders. Coaches and mentors also reinforce positive communication, accountability, and the importance of making thoughtful decisions in challenging moments. The program integrates athletics with mental wellness by encouraging athletes to care for their minds the same way they care for their bodies. With support from mentors, counselors, and community partners, youth gain the tools they need to navigate life’s pressures while staying focused on their goals.
For the 2026 season and beyond, YDF continues expanding this initiative to support more youth across the Bay Area through our multi-sport programming, leadership development activities, and safe community environments.
Our goal is to ensure that every young person in our programs knows they are supported, valued, and capable of becoming strong leaders in their communities.
